overview

At Avanti Meadows Primary School, our curriculum is designed to enable all pupils to become spiritually compassionate changemakers. Rooted in the Avanti Schools Trust vision of educating the heart, mind and soul, our curriculum promotes high academic standards alongside strong personal development, ethical awareness and spiritual insight.

Our intention is to provide a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum that is accessible to all pupils, including those with additional needs. We aim to ensure that pupils acquire secure knowledge, a rich vocabulary and the ability to think critically, while also developing the character and values needed to contribute positively to society.

The curriculum is underpinned by core values including respect, empathy, self-discipline, courage, gratitude and integrity. These values are explicitly taught and consistently modelled, enabling pupils to reflect on their actions and understand their responsibilities within the school and wider community.

Curriculum Implementation

Our curriculum is carefully sequenced and coherently planned to ensure progression in knowledge and skills across all subjects. Subject leaders have identified the key knowledge pupils need to learn and the order in which it should be taught, so that learning builds over time and supports long-term retention.

Subjects are taught discretely to maintain subject integrity, while meaningful links are made where appropriate to deepen understanding. Teachers use clear explanations, modelling and questioning to support pupils in embedding knowledge, and regularly check understanding to address misconceptions.

Reading is prioritised across the curriculum, as we recognise it as the key to accessing learning. A strong emphasis is placed on vocabulary development, ensuring pupils can articulate their understanding clearly and confidently.

Adaptation is integral to our approach. Teachers ensure that learning is inclusive and responsive, providing appropriate support and challenge so that all pupils can succeed. Opportunities for reflection, discussion and collaboration are embedded across subjects, supporting pupils’ spiritual, social and emotional development.

    • At Avanti Meadows Primary School, we believe Religious Education plays a vital role in helping pupils understand the diverse beliefs, values and worldviews that shape our communities and our world. RE provides opportunities for children to explore faith, spirituality, ethics and identity while developing curiosity, empathy and respect.

In line with the Avanti vision, our Religious Education curriculum nurtures pupils to become spiritually compassionate changemakers by encouraging thoughtful reflection, open-minded enquiry and a deep respect for diversity. Through RE, pupils explore a range of religions and worldviews while considering their own beliefs, values and responsibilities.

We aim to develop reflective, respectful and informed learners who appreciate the richness of different faiths and cultures, understand the importance of compassion and can contribute positively to a diverse society.

    • Religious Education enables children to explore questions about meaning, belief, identity and morality. Through the study of religions, worldviews and ethical perspectives, pupils develop knowledge and understanding of how beliefs influence individuals, communities and societies.

      • Respectful of different beliefs and traditions

    • At Avanti Meadows Primary School, our PSHE curriculum is designed to cultivate well-rounded individuals by fostering intellectual, moral and spiritual growth in alignment with The Avanti Way. Our purpose is to inspire pupils to become spiritually compassionate changemakers who contribute positively to society and understand their role in shaping a kinder, more thoughtful world.

We believe that personal, social, health and economic education is essential in supporting pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead safe, healthy and fulfilling lives. Through PSHE, we aim to equip pupils with the emotional literacy, resilience and self-awareness needed to thrive both in school and in life.

Guided by Avanti values, we place a strong emphasis on developing virtues such as self-discipline, respect, empathy, integrity, courage and gratitude. These virtues empower pupils to be reflective, mindful and discerning in their choices, enabling them to navigate a complex and ever-changing world with confidence and compassion.

    • PSHE plays a vital role in supporting pupils’ personal development, wellbeing and readiness for life beyond school. Through structured learning, discussion and reflection, pupils develop the ability to understand themselves and others, build healthy relationships and make informed choices.

      • Emotionally literate and self-aware

      • Respectful, empathetic and responsible

      • Confident in expressing their thoughts and feelings

Pupils learn to understand the importance of mental wellbeing, positive relationships and personal responsibility, while developing the skills to manage emotions and respond thoughtfully to life’s challenges.

    • From Early Years eventually through to Year 6, our ambition is for all pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to become confident, compassionate and responsible individuals.

    • At Avanti Meadows Primary School, PSHE is taught through carefully planned and progressive lessons that ensure full coverage of the National Curriculum and statutory Relationships and Health Education requirements.

    • We use the Jigsaw PSHE curriculum alongside P4C (Philosophy for Children) to provide a structured, reflective and enquiry-based approach to personal development.

Jigsaw provides a coherent and progressive framework that supports pupils’ personal, social and emotional development through six key half-termly units:

      • Being Me in My World

      • Celebrating Difference

      • Dreams and Goals

      • Healthy Me

      • Relationships

      • Changing Me

P4C is used to deepen thinking, encourage dialogue and develop philosophical enquiry skills. It supports pupils in exploring big questions, listening respectfully to others and articulating their own ideas with clarity and confidence.

Together, these approaches ensure that PSHE is not only taught as knowledge, but as a lived and reflective experience that supports the whole child.

    • A key feature of PSHE at Avanti Meadows is the development of spiritual insight and reflection. Pupils are encouraged to:

      • Reflect on their thoughts, feelings and actions

      • Explore moral and ethical questions

      • Consider different perspectives and viewpoints

      • Develop awareness of themselves and others

      • Pupil discussion and dialogue

      • Teacher observation

      • Reflective activities and journals

      • P4C enquiry contributions

This ensures that pupils’ personal development is supported in a meaningful and holistic way.

      • Awareness of themselves and others

      • Early emotional understanding

      • Positive relationships and sharing skills

      • Confidence and independence

These early foundations support lifelong personal and social development.

    • PSHE is embedded across all areas of school life and learning.

      • English – exploring emotions, relationships and moral themes in texts

      • History – understanding identity, society and change

      • Geography – exploring communities and global responsibility

      • Science – understanding health and the human body

      • RE – reflecting on values, beliefs and spirituality

Remote Learning

If for any reason the school needs to close for a period of time, for example where local or central government issue guidance that it is not possible to open safely (e.g. COVID), we will provide remote education to help pupils stay on track with their learning.

Remote learning at Avanti Meadows is designed to be simple, engaging, and supportive for our youngest learners. For children in Pre-School to Year 2, we prioritise short, clear activities that build on familiar routines and encourage active participation.

Learning may include a mix of teacher-led videos, practical tasks, reading, and creative play-based activities that can be completed at home with minimal resources.

We recognise the importance of adult support at this age, so guidance is provided for parents and carers to help children stay on track.

Our aim is to maintain a sense of connection with the school, nurture curiosity, and support each child’s wellbeing alongside their learning.

There may be times when an individual child is unable to attend school but is able to learn, please contact the inclusion lead at the school who will be able to help create a personalised learning plan for your child.
